Líder soviético. Ingresó al Partido Comunista en 1939 y ascendió rápidamente en la jerarquía partidaria. Su desempeño como jefe de la
KGB (
1967–82) se caracterizó por la supresión de la disidencia política. En 1982 sucedió a
Leonid Brézhnev como secretario general del comité central del partido, pero pronto enfermó, siendo poco más lo que pudo hacer antes de morir 15 meses más tarde.
